SYMBOLS and their Meaning
Introduction:
Occult symbols are fast replacing Christian symbols in our culture. Therefore, we encourage you to use this list to warn others, especially Christian children who intentionally wear and display them because they are popular.
Keep in mind that many of these symbols have double or multiple meanings. For example, the pentagram has been used to transmit occult power in all kinds of rituals for centuries, but to Christians the same shape may simply represent a star — a special part of God’s creation. The image of a fish may mean a sign of the zodiac (astrology) to some, but to Christians it has meant following Jesus and sharing the message of His love. We will continue to delight in the cross, while recognizing that others use the same image to represent their dark forces.
Please don’t pass judgement on those who happen to wear these symbols. Instead, let us seek God’s will and discernment so that we might all honor Him with our lives. Remember, “each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block. . . in our brother’s way.” (Romans 14:12-13)”
ALL-SEEING EYE:A universal symbol representing spiritual sight, inner vision, higher knowledge, insight into occult mysteries. Look at your $1 bill. EYE in top Triangle of the PYRAMID: Masonic symbol for the all-seeing eye of god – an mystical distortion of the omniscient (all-knowing) Biblical God. You can find it on the $1 bill. Many medieval alchemists based their philosophies on mystical traditions rooted in the Kabbala (Jewish mysticism), Hermetic magic and the occult practices of ancient civilizations such as Egypt and China. AMULET: A magic charm (such as this little Navajo bear earring), worn to bring good luck and protection against illness, accidents and evil forces. Don't believe it! [See Establishing a Global Spirituality] ANARCHY: Popular among school aged children today, this symbol for anarchy fits the message that pervades the most popular video games, role-playing games, movies and television. The lines of the “A” often extend outside the circle. To many satanists and other fast-growing occult groups it represents their slogan, “do what thou wilt.” A former occultist explained that it represents the ASMODEAS: a demonic force driving teenagers toward sexual perversion and suicide. ANKH: An Egyptian cross symbolizing a mythical eternal life, rebirth, and the life-giving power of the sun. ANGEL: Symbol of good and evil spirits in religions around the world. ARROW: These two pictures shows the astrological sign for the archer (Sagittarius) — part of the zodiac. But, through history, the arrow has also symbolized war, power, swiftness, the rays of the sun, knowledge… as well as deities such as the Greek god Apollo and goddess Artemis (both hunters), the Hindu weather god, Rudra; and various gods of sexual attraction: Eros (Greek), Cupid (Roman), Kama (Hindu)…. On ancient Roman coins, it represented the Zoroastrian god, Mithra. The native American Cheyenne warriors revered the “sacred medicine arrows” as symbols of male power. Arrows held by skeletons would point to disease or death. Today, they usually just point in the preferred direction. Crystal (Gazing) BALL: Used for divination (fortunetelling, scrying, clairvoyance…). When the heavy crystal balls were too expensive, witches often used glass-ball fishing floats, colored glass balls, or magic mirrors. One website that markets these balls beckons: ‘Why not buy one and try your own free psychic reading.” BAT: A symbol of good fortune in the East, it represented demons and spirits in medieval Europe. BLAIR WITCH: A five-pointed compound symbol with a center triangle pointing down. The five lines resemble the microcosmic man with arms and legs outstretched inside a circle (with a pentagram in the background)– a magic symbol or charm among medieval alchemists and wizards. BUTTERFLY: Reminds Christians of the amazing transformation that takes place through Christ’s redemption and regeneration. When “born again,” we become “a new creation.” (2 Cor. 5:17) To many pagans, its mythical meaning is linked to the soul (of the deceased) in search of reincarnation. See the new, politically correct meaning at Butterfly 208: “There’s a theory that says if a single butterfly flaps its wings in, say, China, the air disturbance may cause a storm in Nunavut, Canada a month later. If that’s the case, imagine the power of your own ideas and others to help improve the quality of life in the world’s 208 countries! The Butterfly 208 contest is a chance for you to create your own Butterfly effect! 208 = Number of Countries in the World Butterfly + 208 = A totally interconnected world! A world where even small actions can have a big effect.” “Sacred” BULL (Egyptian idol): These ancient Egyptian idols — once worshipped as manifestations of gods — are being revived. We have deleted a smaller (commercial) bull with horns resemble a crescent moon supporting the divine sun disc. Some suggest that this combination — like the Chinese yin yang– may symbolize a mythical duality: a union of opposites such as light/dark, sun/moon, life/death, and male/female.God told His people long ago, “Do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt.” But they ignored His warning and faced devastating consequences for refusing to “cast away the abominations which were before their eyes.” (Ez. 20:7-8) CADUCEUS (The Staff of Hermes): An ancient symbol dating back to the Greek messenger god Hermes (the Romans called him Mercury). “In Indian philosophy and medicine the Caduceus is intimately associated with the system of energy centers called Chakras….The 2 serpents coiling around the staff [represent positive and negative forces like] the Yang and Yin of Chinese Medicine.The crossing over of the 2 serpents creates 5 energy fields in the body.” Polarity Therapy (See Reiki and Rick Warren’s Risky Health Plan) CHAOS: Apparently a self-made form of occultism taught through role-playing games such as Warhammer. According to one WH fan, “Chaos is the opposite of order. Since everything changes, there is no right or no wrong — only the quest for pleasure. The 8-pointed star represents the many different directions of chaos and the many ways you can follow it. We worship deamons and angels…” Another comment: “They got it from Elric of Melnibone. In it, the force of Chaos had as its symbol an eight-pointed double-cross (symbols within symbols) with points representing the noncommittal and omnidirectional behavior of Chaos.” See Chaos Magic. However, other Warhammer fans disagree with the quote above. Read more here. CIRCLE (sun disc, sacred hoop, ring): An ancient and universal symbol of unity, wholeness, infinity, the goddess, female power, and the sun. To earth-centered religions throughout history as well as to many contemporary pagans, it represents the feminine spirit or force, the cosmos or a spiritualized Mother Earth, and a sacred space. (See next item) Gnostic traditions linked the unbroken circle to the “world serpent” forming a circle as it eats its own tail. (See serpent) CIRCUMPUNCT – CIRCLE with DOT (BINDU) in the center: It represents the sun and a sun god (called Ra in Egypt), gold (as in alchemy), an (unbiblical) archangel (Kabbalah), emotional restraint (Freemasons), and the creative spark of divine consciousness within people linking everyone to the creative mind of a universal “god” thus making each persona “co-creator” (astrology). In the complex symbolic system of Hinduism and Buddhism, the bindu (dot) represents the male force. Together, the circle and the bindu symbolize the spiritual merging of male and female forces. CIRCLE (Quartered): The sacred circle filled with a cross, four equal lines pointing from the center to the spirits of the north, east, south, and west — or to the basic element: earth, water, air (or wind), and fire. In Native American traditions, it forms the basic pattern of the MEDICINE WHEEL and plays a vital part in major spiritual rituals. Many contemporary pagans consider it their main symbol for transmitting the energy of the goddess. (See sun wheel) Churches have used variations of the same popular shape, usually calling it the Celtic Cross.
Masonic COMPASS: The Masonic symbol of the compass and the T-square represents movement toward perfection and a balance between the spiritual and physical which resembles Egyptian and oriental mysticism. The compass (used to form circles) represent spirit. The ruler (part of a square) represent the physical. Some public schools pass out pencil cases and other gifts decorated with this emblem. COW: It symbolized the sky goddess Hathor to Egyptians, enlightenment to Buddhists, one of the highest and holiest stages of transmigration (reincarnation) to Hindus. CRESCENT MOON: A symbol of the aging goddess (crone) to contemporary witches and victory over death to many Muslims. In Islamic lands, crescent can be seen enclosing a lone pentagram.

The CROSS of Christians: While anyone–even pagans–now use the cross as decoration or as an occult symbol, Christians must continue to treasure the cross of Calvary. But be careful what kind of cross you wear – and what message you communicate to others. To understand the Christian significance of the cross and appreciate its excruciating cost to our crucified and resurrected Christ, read The Triumph of the Cross and “The Cross“.
Inverted cross: Originally represented the apostle Peter’s humility in his martyrdom. He insisted that he be crucified upside-down, because he felt that he was unworthy to die in the same position as Christ. But today, especially in the rock music culture, it generally represents the opposite: satanism and its mockery of Christ. Lucifer continues to twist God’s wonderful truths and works into lies and deceptions.
COMMUNISM: Originally the hammer and sickle represented a hammer and a plough — the collective unity of Soviet workers and peasant farmers. It’s interesting to see its resemblance to Islam’s symbol (crescent/star). The two ideologies have had much in common: hatred for Biblical Christianity and Jews (remember the Russian pogroms), readiness to kill those who don’t conform, hope of world conquest, etc. CELTIC CROSS: The symbol for a cultural blend of medieval Catholicism and ancient Celtic traditions. Notice the similarity between the old Celtic cross and the cross designed by PBS (tax-funded Public Broadcasting in the U.S.) to represent Christianity (left side). Do you wonder why PBS would choose a similar cross (right side) to represent the Quartered Circleof the earth-centered religions of Aborigenes around the world?The Celtic cross also represents the neo-pagan followers of the French anti-Christian philosopher Alain de Benoist.
JERUSALEM CROSS: In medieval heraldry, it symbolized the “Crusader’s Kingdom of Jerusalem” often displayed on shields and banners after the initial victory in the battle to recapture Jerusalem during the Crusades. (See the Maltese Cross). Some have linked the four corner crosses the “holy” wounds of Jesus or the four gospels. Similar shapes can be found on Hindu and Buddhist temples or coins — and in various earth-centered cultures — with entirely different sets of meanings. (See circle for relevant references to the four directions) IRON CROSS (or Cross Pattée or EISERNES KREUZ): Adopted as the Iron Cross in Prussia. During the First World War, it appeared on German fighter planes and tanks. Later, it became a fascist symbol in France, Portugal and other nations. Compare it with Swastika 3. CROSS (MALTESE): CROSS (MALTESE): This eight-pointed cross (linking the points of four arrowheads at the center) dates back to the First Crusade in the 12th century. It was used by the Knights Templar, the Knights of Malta, and the Order of St. John of Jerusalem among others. In 1813, during the War of Liberation against Napoleon, it was revived by Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III and became an award for acts of heroism, bravery or leadership skills. Double-headed EAGLE: A Masonic seal and initiation symbol. The number inside the pyramid over the eagle’s head is 33. The eagle is a universal symbol representing the sun, power, authority, victory, the sky gods and the royal head of a nation. DOVE: Peace. It sometimes accompanies other symbols occasionally representing the world’s vision of universal peace, such as the rainbow, olive branch, broken cross (see peace), globe, and Egyptian ankh. See Peace and Culture of Peace, which tells us that “‘The CULTURE OF PEACE Initiative’ is a United Nations-designated ‘Peace Messenger Initiative’ – with Participants in all the world’s regions.”
In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is, for a moment, made visible as a different kind of dove. It tells us that “Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, ‘You are My beloved Son; in You I am vwell pleased.’” Luke 3:21-22DRAGON : A mythical monster made up of many animals: serpent, lizard, bird, lion… It may have many heads and breath fire. To mediaeval Europe, it was dangerous and evil, but people in Eastern Asia believe it has power to help them against more hostile spiritual forces. In the Bible it represents Satan, the devil. DREAMCATCHER : An American Indian magic spider-web inside a sacred circle. After making dreamcatchers in crafts lessons in school, many children hang them on or near their beds. They have been told that these occult symbols will block bad dreams but allow good dreams to pass through the center. Don’t believe that myth! [See New Beliefs for a Global Village] ELEMENTS: The four basic elements to many pagans are earth, water, air (wind or spirit) and fire. Many consider the first two passive and feminine – and the last two active and masculine. In Wiccan or Native American rituals, the “quartered circle” (also the Medicine Wheel) represents a “sacred space” or the sacred earth. The four lines may represent the spirits of the four primary directions or the spirits of the earth, water, wind and fire.(This set of elements differs from those used in alchemy.) ETERNITY: See Infinity and Uruborus EVIL EYE: The symbol of a dreadful, fabled curse (believed to bring sickness, death, bad luck loss…). This “evil eye” has frightened people in many parts of the world through the centuries. Here it looks like a female eye on the “Hand of Fatima,” but its shape varies with the culture. EYE OF HORUS: A favorite crafts project in schools, it represents the eye of Egyptian sun-god Horus who lost an eye battling Set. Pagans use it as a charm to ward off evil. (See All-Seeing Eye)Notice that the picture shows a compound symbol – several symbols joined together to give a more complex meaning. It includes an unbiblical cross and, at the bottom, part of a face inside the rays of the sun. (See Sun) FISH (Ichthys): Sometimes this early Christian symbol contains the name of JESUS or this set of Greek letters: “ΙΧΘΥΣ”. This acronym has traditionally referred to “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.” It probably served as an identification sign among Christians as early as the 2nd Century AD. As Jesus said, “Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19) (A new version of this fish symbol contains the name of Darwin and is designed to mock Christianity.) FLEUR-DE-LIS: Also called Lily of France, it was first an adaptation of the Gaulish lily representing the Virgin Juno. Among goddess worshippers, it apparently had several meanings, including the Triple Goddess. It appeared in Arthurian legends as well as on the French (and other national) “coat-of-arms” and royal or military emblems. It has also been an emblem for the Boy Scouts. FROG: A symbol of fertility to many cultures. The Romans linked it to Aphrodite, the Egyptian to the shape-shifting goddess Heket who would take the form of a frog. To the Chinese, it symbolized the moon — “the lunar, yin principle” bringing healing and prosperity.[1] Since frogs need watery places, their image was often used in occult rain charms. HAND OF FATIMA (daughter of Muhammad) or KHAMSA (five): Many Muslims believe that the image of the hand with an eye in the center will protect them from the “evil eye.” While this symbol often appears on magical charms, amulets, and jewelry, it is seen in many other places. See a similar image painted next to the main door to a home here. This Khamsa seems to be the same as the Jewish Hasma (below). Many serious Muslims view this as folklore or superstition. Compare it with the next symbol: HAND OF FATIMA or HAMSA (five): Jewish versions of the supposed “hand” of protection (above) from “evil eye” (Some expect protection from demons and sorcerers as well). During the Israelites’ exile in Babylonian, some began to blend Old Testament beliefs with Babylonian myths and mysticism. Such syncretism continued through the centuries. One of its manifestations was the mystical Kabbalah — the heart of many streams of modern occultism (including the Order of the Golden Dawn and other secret societies, Tarot cards and divination, etc.) HAND OF… what? Native American version of two above symbols. Found on a flat, round sandstone disk during the excavation of an old Indian mound in Alabama, its original meaning is lost. Perhaps it was used in rituals preparing for tribal wars. HEARTAGRAM: Originally a logo of “Love Metal” band, HIM, whose fans would wear the symbol –within a circle — as a tattoo. But it’s popularity has spread far beyond the band that designed it. To many, it represent the dialectic or blending of opposites such as love/hate and life/death. See Pentagram, Popular Occultism and Yin yang HEXAGRAM (see triangles) or SIX-POINTED STAR: When surrounded by a circle, it represents the “divine mind” (a counterfeit of God’s wisdom) to numerous occult groups through the centuries. Many still use it in occult rituals. But to Jewish people, it is their Star of David. HOOK ‘EM HORNS & HORNED HAND (Mano Cornuto): “President Bush’s ‘Hook ‘em, horns’ salute got lost in translation in Norway, where shocked people interpreted his hand gesture during his inauguration as a salute to Satan. That’s what it means in the Nordics when you throw up the right hand with the index and pinky fingers raised, a gesture popular among heavy metal groups and their fans in the region….’Shock greeting from Bush daughter,’ a headline in the Norwegian Internet newspaper Nettavisen said.” “Norwegians Confused by Bush Salute“ INFINITY (also eternity): In ancient India and Tibet, it represented perfection, dualism, and unity between male and female. In the occult tarot it’s linked to magic and represents equilibrium or the balance of various forces. The uroborus (a circular serpent biting its tail — a UN symbol for “Human Settlements“) has been found in this shape. In modern times, it became a secular mathematical symbol for infinity in numbers, time or space. ITALIAN HORN (Cornu, Cornicello, Wiggly Horn, Unicorn horn, Lucifier’s horn or Leprechaun staff). The ancient magical charm or amulet worn in Italy as protection against “evil eye” has also been linked to Celtic and Druid myths and beliefs. Other superstitions link it to sexual power and good luck. It is often worn with a cross (for double protection or luck?). In pre-Christian Europe, animal horns pointed to the moon goddess and were considered sacred. LABYRINTH: “…predate Christianity by over a millennium. The most famous labyrinth from ancient times was in Crete… the supposed lair of the mythological Minotaur…. Turf labyrinths still exist in England, Germany and Scandinavia, and are thought to be linked with local feminine deities and fertility rituals…. The patterns of the labyrinth are similar in design and conception to the mandalas of South Asian Buddhism, which are physical representations of the spiritual realm designed to aid in meditation. Labyrinths blend their visual symbolism with the process of walking, which is similar to the Japanese Zen practice of kinhin, literally ‘walking meditation… In the early 90’s, when Jean Houston, one of the leading New Age teachers, introduced the Christian world again to the use of this practice for seeking spiritual enlightenment through walking the labyrinth.” Steve Muse, Esoteric Christianity LIGHTNING BOLT: In ancient mythologies from many cultures (Norse, Roman, Greek, Native American, etc.) the lighting bolt would be hurled by male sky gods to punish, water, or fertilize the earth or its creatures. Navajo myths linked it to the Thunderbird, the symbol of salvation and divine gifts. On children’s toys, it represents supernatural power. Double bolts, popular with contemporary skinheads, symbolize Nazi power. LION: An ancient symbol of the sun, dominion, power, ferocity and bravery, the “king of the beasts” was often used on heraldic shields, flags or banners by medieval European rulers. In Tarot cards, an occult system of divination based on the Kabala, it symbolized strength or power. In ancient mythology it was identified with sun worship and the imagined power of both gods and godesses. The lion head ringed by its golden mane would used in ancient mystery initiations and ritualistic sun worship.While pagan nations used it to represent their mythical views of reality, the lion was created by God. In the Bible, we see how He used it for His purposes. LIZARD: Its “sun-seeking habit symbolizes the soul’s search for awareness.” To the Romans, who believed it hibernated, the lizard meant death and resurrection.[2] Magic MIRROR: Used for “scrying” (foretelling the future, solve problems, answer questions….) The preferred spectrum might decorated with “magic signs” during full moon rituals. Rosemary Ellen Guiley explains: “The ancient art of clairvoyance achieved by concentrating upon an object– usually one with a shiny surface– until visions appear….The term scrying comes from the English words descry which means ‘to make out dimly’ or ‘to reveal.” The Encyclopedia of Witches and Witchcraft, 307. MANDALA: The Hindu term for circle. In Hindu and Buddhist meditations, it is used to raise consciousness. In meditation, the person fixes his or her mind on the center of the “sacred circle.” Geometric designs are common. The center of some mandalas show a triangle with a bindu (dot) inside a circle. It represents the merging of male and female forces. MASONS (Freemasons): The Masonic symbol of the compass and the T-square represents movement toward perfection and a balance between the spiritual and physical which resembles Egyptian and oriental mysticism. The compass (used to form circles) represent spirit. The ruler (part of a square) represent the physical. Some public schools pass out pencil cases and other gifts decorated with this emblem. MASK: Used by pagans around the world to represent animal powers, nature spirits, or ancestral spirits. In pagan rituals, the wearer may chant, dance and enter a trance in order to contact the spirit world and be possessed by the spirit represented by the mask. The mask pictured represents the mythical Hindu elephant god, Ganesha. MEDICINE SHIELD: A round shield decorated with personal symbols or pictures of the animal spirit(s) contacted on a Spirit Quest or through a classroom visualization simulating an American Indian ceremony. Its basic image is often the form of the “medicine wheel” or quartered circle. [See The Earth Charter's Unholy Ark] MERMAID: Based on ancient myths in India, Greece, Syria, Africa and other parts of the world. Seen by some cultures as sea goddesses, these seductive beings guarded treasures, frightened travelers, and were eventually featured in alchemy and other occult practices as well as in fairy tales. By medieval times, the alluring Sirens of Homer’s days had apparently evolved into a promiscuous split-tailed versions that symbolized mystical sex to alchemists and secret societies. German legends describe a mystical Nixie — a fish-tailed female water spirits, daughter of “Mother Night.” In our times, the more benign fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen and Disney Studios have generally erased any cultural memory of those occult roots. OIC: Organization of Islamic Cooperation: The new OIC logo with a green instead of red crescent. The old name was Organization of the Islamic Conference. The new green crescent enfolds the planet. In the center is a tiny image of the Ka’aba, Islam’s most sacred site in Mecca. According to the OIC, this is a “a drastic positive change in the performance of the organization to uplift its effectiveness as an international system dealing with political, economic, cultural and social development issues.”Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev described the OIC as “the U.N. of the Islamic world.” U.S. Missile Defense Agency Logo: Does this military logo remind you of the Islamic crescent and star? OM: Sanskrit letters or symbol for the “sacred” Hindu sound om (ohm or aum) called “the mother of all mantras. Apparently, the four parts symbolize four stages of consciousness: Awake, sleeping, dreaming, and a trance or transcendental state. [See Heresy in high places] OWL: Cherokee [Indian] shamans viewed Eastern Screech-Owls as consultants on punishment and sickness. The Cree believed that the whistle-sounds of the Boreal Owl was a summoning call to the spirit world. Other Native American traditions hold that the owl represents vision and insight. In Africa the owl is associated with witchcraft and sorcery. Australia, China, Greenland, India, Indonesia, Japan, Russia and Sweden all have cultures or mythical traditions that give spiritual significance to the owl. Probably one of the most bizarre occurrences of owl symbolism can be found at the “Bohemian Club.” Find this and more information at Wise Old Owl PEACE SYMBOL or a BROKEN UPSIDE-DOWN CROSS: Like many simple symbols, it meant different things at different times. Some call it Nero’s cross, linking it to the notorious Roman emperor who persecuted Christians. Centuries later, it was recognized as an old Norse Rune. [Notice its image in the lower left corner of this ancient rune stone. Its reverse image is under the nose of the serpent.][6] Vikings called it “Toten Rune (Death Rune),” while some Germanic people labeled it Todesrune (Rune of Death).[7] After WW2 (1939-1945), it was found on the tombstones of certain Hitler’s SS troops and labeled ‘The Dead Man Rune.’ [Reference to bottom image of Scandinavian runes at [8]Revived in the sixties by hippies and others who protested nuclear weapons, Western culture, and Christian values, it became a worldwide symbol of a new age of global peace and earth-centered unity. But many heavy metal rock fans would agree with Nero and have used it to mock Christ and His followers. PENTACLE or PENTAGRAM (FIVE-POINTED STAR pointing up): A standard symbol for witches, freemasons, and many other pagan or occult groups. To witches, it represent the four basic elements (wind, water, earth and fire) plus a pantheistic spiritual being such as Gaia or Mother Earth. The pentagram is also “used for protection. to banish energy, or to bring it to you, depending on how it’s drawn,” wrote a Wiccan visitor. Compare with the next link. PENTAGRAM (FIVE-POINTED STAR pointing down): Used in occult rituals to direct forces or energies. Often represents satanism, the horned god or various expressions of contemporary occultism, especially when a goat-head is superimposed on the inverted pentagram within a “sacred” circle. PHOENIX:A universal symbol of the sun, mystical rebirth, resurrection and immortality, this legendary red “fire bird” was believed to die in its self-made flames periodically (each hundred years, according to some sources) then rise again out of its own ashes. Linked to the worship of the fiery sun and sun gods such as Mexico’s Quetzalcoatl, it was named “a god of Phoenecia” by the Phoenician. To alchemists, it symbolized the the destruction and creation of new forms of matter along the way to the ultimate transformation: physical (turn lead into gold) and spiritual (immortality – an occult alternative to the Christian salvation). The philosopher’s stone was considered the key to this transformation. SCARAB: Symbol of the rising sun, the Egyptian sun god Chepri (or Khepera), and protection from evil. To ancient Egyptians, the dung beetle rolled its dung balls like Chepri rolled the sun across the sky. The “sacred” symbol adorned popular seals, amulets and magic charms (worn as protection against evil spirits or to overcome barreness) first in Egypt, then in Phoenicia, Greece and other Mediterranean lands. Medieval alchemists used its pattern in their magical diagrams. SERPENT OR SNAKE: Most earth-centered or pagan cultures worshipped the serpent. It represents rebirth (because of its molting), protection against evil, either male of female sexuality, rain and fertility, a mediator between the physical and spiritual world…. It also represents female energy or lifeforce in goddess worship, sometimes linked to the eastern Kundalini force or a supposed “goddess within.” The list of meanings is endless, but in the Bible it usually represents sin, temptation, destruction, and Satan. SIKH symbol called the KHANDRA: In the middle is a single double-edged sword pointing to a single God. (The truth about this God is revealed through Ten Gurus.) The circle — the Chakra — refers to the unity of this God and people. Two single-edged swords frame the Chakra. They represent spiritual and temporal powers. SPIDER: Linked to treachery and death in many cultures, it was seen as a “trickster” in ancient Africa, a “spinner of fate” in ancient goddess cultures and — in ancient Greek myths — the goddess Arachne turned into a spider by her jealous rival Athena. “Christian” cultures have linked it both to an evil force that sucked blood from its victims and to “good luck” because of the cross on the back of some species. The Chinese have welcomed the spider descending on its thread as a bringer of joys from heaven. SOCIALIST SOLIDARITY: The revolutionary clenched fist within a black domain represents the International Socialist Organization (ISO). The second fist, usually black, could be a collective call to fight for socialism or communism in any group, state or nation. SPHINX: Ancient Egyptian and Babylonian guardian of sacred places –an idol with human head and a lion’s body. The Greek sphinx would devour travelers who failed to answer her riddle. According to A New Encyclopedia of Freemasonry (by Arthur Waite, xii) the masonic sphinx “is the guardian of the Mysteries and is the Mysteries summarized in a symbol. Their secret is the answer to her question. The initiate must know it or lose the life of the Mysteries. Ancient symbol of the goddess, the womb, fertility, feminine serpent force, continual change, and the evolution of the universe. (Illustrated at this website) A common shape in nature (snail, shells, fingerprint…)Double SPIRAL: Linked to earth-centered or mystical faith in a blend of evolution and devolution — decay/renewal, life/death/rebirth, spiritual/physical — the back and forth flow of earthly and cosmic changes. With its focus on the unity of opposites, it resembles the Yin Yang. SQUARE: In contrast to the circle which often symbolizes the sacred and spiritual (including the “sacred” earth), the square represents the physical world. Like the quartered circle, it points pagans to the four compass directions: north, east, south and west. While the circle and spiral symbolize female sexuality in many earth-centered cultures, the square represents male qualities. SUN FACE:The pictured image is part of an 18th century Masonic ritual painting, but it illustrates a symbol that has been central to most major spiritual systems of history. Since the sun god usually reigned over a pantheon of lesser gods. his symbol played a vital part in pagan worship (and in the rituals of occult secret societies) around the world. SUN & MOON JOINED AS ONE: A universal pagan expression of the merging of opposites. Like the Yin Yang, the marriage of the male sun and the female moon represents unity in diversity, compromise instead of conflict, and conformity to a new consciousness where all is one. (See The Marriage of the Sun and Moon) SUN and SUN SIGN: The sun was worshipped as a personified, life-giving deity in Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and other major civilizations of history. Today’s more common symbol is the familiar face in the center of the sun’s rays. This is explained in Teletubbies. (See sun symbol below the picture of the Eye of Horus) A dot or point in the center of a circle symbolizes the blending of male and female forces. (See air, which also represents spirit, among the symbols for Elements) Hindus call the midpoint in a circle the bindu – the spark of (masculine) life within the cosmic womb. SUN SIGN 2 : Found in Turkey and believed to represent the sun and the four directions. (See Swastika 1 and 2). Compare the curving lines with the primary lines of Swastika 3, the iron cross. Notice also that without the horizontal line, the symbol resembles the outline of the Yin-Yang. SUN WHEEL or RING CROSS : A universal symbol found on ancient slabs in Nordic countries, in pre-Columbian America and in Mediterranean countries. “Today, it is used as a log by some new fascist organizations,” according to the Dictionary of Symbols. [3] Like the swastika and other sun symbols, it represents power and supremacy. SWASTIKA 1: Ancient occult symbol found in Egypt, China, India… (The lower picture shows part of a Hindu temple) Chinese versions include a right-handed (yang) and a left-handed (yin) version — opposites that “harmonize.” It has represented the sun, the four directions, movement and change (the four appendages) and union of opposites (lines crossing). As a pre-Hitler elitist symbol, it was found in the Skull & Bonesvault at Yale.Revived by Hitler, it represents racism and the “white supremacy” of neo-nazis. It’s often placed within a circle. There is also a swastika on the gravestone of John Ruskin (mentor of Cecil Rhodes, who formed the secret Society of the Elect “to take the government of the whole world” – Ruskin’s words). In Time and Tide (1867), Ruskin wrote that “…the Government must have an authority over the people of which we now do not so much as dream.” Ruskin has been reported to be involved in the Illuminati. SWASTIKA 2 (Crux Dissimulata): An ancient swastika which symbolized the four winds or directions and their corresponding spirits. It was also a “fire and sun symbol occurring initially in Asia and later among the Germanic tribes,” according to The Herder Symbol Dictionary.[4] “The cross inscribed in a circle mediates between the square and the circle,” emphasizing the “joining of heaven and earth…. and “the perfected human being.” SWASTIKA 3: A contemporary variation of the many swastikas with labyrinth patterns. Like the two swastikas above, its arms point counterclockwise indicating a mystical, lunar and female orientation. Compare its two intersecting lines with Sun Sign 2, its curved arms (following the shape of the circle) with Swastika 2, and its dark areas with the Iron Cross. The TAO: An ancient Chinese symbol used originally to represent a widespread belief in unity, polarity, holism, and magic. See the Yin-Yang and read a longer definition in the Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis, who suggested the Tao as an ethical system for our times. THEOSOPHY: A simplified version of the symbol behind the occult beliefs of UN leader Robert Muller (his World Core Curriculum became a worldwide pattern for global education) and education leader Shirley McCune [See Star Wars Joins United Religions at the Presidio and The International Agenda] Notice the ankh in the center. The more elaborate version inserts a variety of other symbols such as the OM, pentagram, cross, etc. (Because of its dark occult meaning and similarity to some of the complex magical signs used in alchemy and masonic rituals, we prefer not to post it.) TOAD: Linked to witchcraft and other occult practices. TONGUE (protruding): Linked to flame, fire, fertility, sexual power and spiritual power. In nations around the world, images of deities or masks with protruding tongues have indicated active and occupying spiritual forces — often a union of masculine and feminine spirits. Such images were vital to pagan rituals invoking [demonic] spirits. The sexual/spiritual forces represented by gargoyles with protruding tongues which adorned Gothic cathedrals were believed to protect the buildings from other spiritual powers. TOTEM: Carved, painted representation of power animals or animal-human ancestors. To American Indians in the Northwest, who believe that all of nature has spiritual life, the animals in their totems poles represent the spiritual powers of animal protectors or ancestors. TRIANGLE (earring pictured): Associated with the number three. Pointing upwards, it symbolizes fire, male power and counterfeit view of God. (See pyramid) To Christians, it often represents the Trinity. Pointing down, it symbolizes water, female sexuality, goddess religions and homosexuality. TRIDENT: Called “the devil’s pitchfork,” it has symbolized major gods in various pagan cultures. In India, it is linked to the Hindu “trident-bearer” Shiva, spouse of the skull-bearing goddess Kali. TRINITY [Our Triune God]: An early Christian symbol for the Trinity. It is related to the symbol of the fish (vesica piscis) used by the early — and often persecuted Christians — to identify themselves as belonging to Jesus Christ. Apparently, the word “fish” in Greek is a combination of the first letters of His name: Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. Like many Christian symbols, the same shape has also been used by various pagan religions throughout history. See the next symbol: TRIQUETRA: The triquetra — with or without the circle — has been found on runestones in Scandinavia, in ancient goddess-oriented pagan groups, in Celtic manuscripts, and on early Germanic coins. It is associated with numerous mythical gods and goddesses and has been used as a protective charm by Wiccans. Sometimes the symbol is reversed — pointing down rather than up. The three points may also be round rather than pointed. UNICORN: To many New Agers, it means power, purification, healing, wisdom, self-knowledge, renewal and eternal life. Origin: In the 4th century BC, Greek historian Ctesias told about a wild animal with healing powers and a spiral horn on its forehead. Medieval myths suggested it could only be caught with help from a virgin who would befriend it. UROBORUS: The circular serpent (yes, the circle represents a serpent with head in upper left corner) seen here) biting its own tail represents eternity and the cycles or “circle of life.” Medieval alchemists linked it to the cyclical processes in nature. The uroborus pictured here (encircling the UN symbol for humanity seen inside a triangle) was the official symbol on for the 1996 United Nations Conference on Human Settlements pictured on all its literature. WHEEL: A universal symbol of or cosmic unity, astrology, “the circle of life,” evolution, etc. The pagan sacred circle plus any number of radiating spokes or petals form the wheel – a Wheel of Life to Buddhists, a Medicine Wheel to Native Americans, a Mandala to Hindus. It symbolizes unity, movement, the sun, the zodiac, reincarnation, and earth’s cycles of renewal. Pagans use it in astrology, magic and many kinds of rituals. (See Medicine Wheel and Quartered Circle)This SUN WHEEL became a magical amulet to the Celtic Gauls or Gaels in Europe. Later, “Christians adopted the form, changing it slightly, so that it became a Christ monogram drawn within a circle.” [celticrevival.com] Tibetan Prayer WHEELS: “devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with many, many copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum… are wound around an axle in a protective container, and spun around and around. Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.” (From The Prayer Wheel) WHEEL OF DHARMA: Buddhist wheel of life and reincarnation. Sometimes it is shown with a small yin yang symbol in the center. WISHBONE: Civilizations dating back to the 4th Century (Etruscans, Romans… Britain, America) have held turkey or chicken wishbone contest. Pulling the dry turkey or chicken bone until it snapped (“lucky break”), they believing the winner’s wish or dream would come true. In today’s increasingly superstitious culture, many believe that this symbol will “catch” their dreams, bring good luck, and make their wishes come true. As in contemporary witchcraft or magic, the object becomes a channel of “good” energy. Astrology and horoscopes link it to Saggitarius. It might also be confused with the Lambda (looks like a lower case, upside-down “y”), the Greek letter adopted by the International Gay Rights Congress in 1974 as the global symbol of homosexual “pride”. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO, a UN agency):This symbol points back to the days of Moses, when a dead serpent was displayed on a stake during the Israelites 40-year journey through the wilderness. Instead of trusting God, the people complained, so “the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people…and many…died.” When they confessed their sin, God told Moses to “make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole.” Those who then looked at the bronze serpent on the stake with confidence in God’s promise, were healed (Numbers 21:4-9). This became an illustration of the crucifixion through which Jesus bore the judgment we deserve for our sins. (See John 3:14) About 700 BC, faithful king Hezekiah ‘broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, since the people worshiped it as an idol and “burned incense to it.” (2 King 18:1-5)
Brock Chisholm, the first head of WHO, showed his hatred for our God in a 1946 article in Psychiatry: “We have swallowed all manner of poisonous certainties fed us by our parents, our Sunday and day school teachers…” More here.WORLD TRIAD: Originally an oriental symbol, it was “adopted by western Gnostics as an emblem of cosmic creativity, the threefold nature of reality or fate, and the eternally spiraling cycles of time… In Japan it was maga-tama or mitsu tomoe, the world soul…. In Bhutan and Tibet, it is still known as the Cosmic Mandala, a sign of the Trimurti.”5Like the yin yang (below), it also represents eternity. This is also the symbol for U.S. Department of Transportation. Another Gnostic symbol is the uroborus. YIN YANG: A Chinese Tao picture of universal harmony and the unity between complimentary opposites: light/dark, male/female, etc. Yin is the dark, passive, negative female principle. Yang is the light, active, positive principle. Since the holistic balance between Yin and Yang is dynamic and constantly changing, it illustrates the consensus process, the vision of global unity, and the blending of opposing energies at the heart of Holistic Health.
Since it represent monism (all is one) and pantheism (all is God), it opposes Christianity, which shows us that there is only one God (monotheism), and only in Christ can we be one. The GREAT SEAL of the United States of America: The design for this national emblem was completed in 1782. Some consider its occult and masonic images an American mission statement. Pentagram
This 5 pointed star with a circle around it is used in both White and Black magic. The women of “Freemasonry” also belong to an organization called: “The Eastern Star”. Their Eastern star is the pentagram. The point represents the spirit. The other points represents the elements of the earth: wind, fire, earth, and water. It is believed to have power to conjure good spirits and ward off evil.

Baphomet
The upside-down pentagram, often called the “Baphomet” is satanic and represents the goat’s head or “The Goat of Mendez”. The Satanists, Black witches and the “Freemasons” also use this symbol.

Hexagram
This is the most powerful of all the signs, to the occult, it consists of 6 sides, 6 points and 6 smaller triangles, thus 666. A HEXAGRAM! The book “Web of Darkness” says the hexagram is: . . . the most powerful and evil sign in satanism and of all the occult world. The hexagram is used mainly in witchcraft to summon demons from the world. The word “hex” which means to place a curse on someone, originated from this sign.”

The Horned Hand
The Horned Hand or “Cornuto” represents the Devil, Satan, The Goat (the baphomet). It is a sign of recognition between those that are in the occult. It is also used at heavy metal and rock concerts to affirm their allegiance to the music’s message and the band members.

The symbol of Anarchy represents abolition of all law. First used in “Punk Music”, it’s now widely used by heavy metal music fans too.

Swastika
The “Swastika” or “Broken cross” originally represented the four winds, four seasons, and four compass points. It’s arms were at 90 degree angles turned the opposite way, as depicted here, and turned clockwise, showing harmony with nature. The “Swastika” shows the elements or forces turning against nature and out of harmony. Also this well recognized sign was a part of the Hitler regime, the Nazi’s. It is a sign of sheer terror in the eyes of all Jews, it represents a time of Holocaust. Also the Ku Klux Klan wears this symbol for pure hatred against any other race, except the white race. There is a group called “Skin heads” that also bear this mark, they believe in the Nazi’s, and the whole Hitler agenda. They also believe that the white race is the only true race. The “Skin heads” usually have shaved off hair, Thus the name “skin head”. They also usually wear combat boots. They love “Thrasher music” hard core “Punk rock”, They are full of hatred and usually are “Anarchists”, see above symbol.

The “Cross of Confusion” is an old Roman symbol that questions the validity of Christianity. It is used on albums by the rock group of the 70′s, Blue Oyster Cult.

Cross of Nero
I know what you’re all saying: ” No not that sign, it means peace”. This sign was used in the 60′s and 70′s a lot by the hippies, it meant to them peace. This sign is now making a heavy come back through the influence of the 60′s and 70′s. But the truth in where this sign really comes from, it may shock you. It is really called: “The Cross of Nero”, it shows an upside-down cross broken downward at the cross anchor. It was sign signifying defeat of Christianity. Guess where their meaning of peace came from? That’s right, peace against Christians. Also some of the heavy metal and occult groups are now wearing them to signify their allegiance against Christianity. Satan is very clever, isn’t he?

The “V” Sign
And here’s another famous sign out of the 60′s and 70′s, also making a stong come back now. Which has always equated with the above symbol; peace. But the true meaning of this “V” sign goes way back to the 18th century Illuminati. This symbol represents the fulfillment of Illuminist founder Adam Weishaupt’s satanic “Law of Fives”.

The “Bowman” exalts the horns of Satan over the 3 fingers of the Trinity. “The Sign of Nimrod” or “Sign of the Bowman” the position of one’s fingers to draw back the string on a bow. In the Bible the bow symbolizes wicked men. Genesis 10:8-9, 21:20, 27:3, Psalms 11:2, 37:14, Jeremiah 51:1-3, Ezekiel 39:3, Revelation 6:2.

The Lost Symbol Book
“The Lost Symbol” is one of the many works of world-renowned author Dan Brown. Just like his novel, The Da Vinci Code, any reader will experience a lot of thrills with this other masterpiece from the writer. “The Lost Symbol” is filled with a maze of codes, unseen truths and secrets that every reader would want to know about. Here is a gist of the entire novel.
The title “The Lost Symbol” does not really refer to a lost symbol but to a lost word. The story happens in Washington D.C for 12 hours and mainly concentrates on Freemasonry. Robert Langdon, the lead character, is scheduled to hold a lecture, and to hand over a package to Peter Solomon, his mentor in the United States Capitol. Instead of giving out a lecture, Langdon was startled to see Solomon’s right hand mounted on a stick that is situated in the middle of that particular room. He believes that it’s the Hand of Mysteries.
It was evident that the kidnapper desires for Langdon’s help in searching for the Mason’s Pyramid and the Mason’s word which puzzles the kidnapper. As Langdon analyzes the tattoos on each finger of the hand, it led him to proceed to the capitol’s sub-basement where Peter Solomon’s Masonic Altar was located. There he finds symbolic items together with what looks like a small pyramid. These gave Langdon clues to go further and complete his task.
The kidnapper, Zachary Solomon alias Mal’akh, Peter’s son, longs to have the ancient source of power in his hand. He wants Langdon to unlock the antediluvian mysteries that will lead him to save his friend Peter. Langdon, locked up inside the tank by Mal’akh at that time was, rescued by the CIA.
Zachary Solomon supposes that it is his fate to lead the forces of evil. He asks his father to make him as the sacrifice. Zachary urges the word or the lost symbol out of his father and placed it like tattoos over his head. As the police breaks in through the glass panel, Zachary was hit with shuttered glass which left him dead.
Peter escorts Langdon the way to the word. Blindfolded, they have managed to go through barriers and into a chamber. When Langdon takes off his blindfold, he suddenly sees a stairway that seems to have no end. With his eyes wide open, he found the Capitol at the bottom part of the stairs. He realized that he is inside a room located on top of the Monument.
Peter tells Langdon that the symbol or the word is found on the pyramid stone on the Washington Monument which is hidden in the building’s corner. Langdon recognizes the symbols used, it spells Laus Deo that literally means to “Praise God”. Solomon narrated to Langdon that the symbol that is found underground is indeed a Bible’s copy. This fully explains that a man is always a part of God but the word has many interpretations and majority searches for it but the enlightened people know what it is.
“The Lost Symbol” is a story that reflects messages similar to the other novels of Dan Brown. It is the usual lightning-paced story with a bit of twists in every turn. It also used a variety of symbols including the double-headed eagle that symbolizes unity of the east and the west and the red seal on its cover that represents the Scottish Rite Masonry. Furthermore, transneptunians, otherwise known as hypothetical planets can also be found in the book. This is where we can find the names of Greek gods Zeus, Hades and Vulcanus. But no matter how many symbols we see in this book, we can’t help but wonder about the real message of “The Lost Symbol”.
It is all about good triumphing over evil. It is not one way of weakening the faith of those who strongly believe in God. As what the Rev. Ed Bacon says in his review about the book “Our faith must be durable or it cannot help us when storms arise”. Therefore, “The Lost Symbol” should be taken as an inspiration to a renewed faith with God.

OCCULT SYMBOLS
PETER’S CROSS – Satanists are not the brightest folks to begin with, but you would think they would check to see if a symbol already had a meaning before adopting it as their own. Satanist think if they invert a symbol, it will make it evil or if they spell something backwards it makes it cool. The fact is that this symbol has been known as Peter’s Cross for the better part of two-thousand years. It is written and widely believed that Peter was crucified upside down by his own request.
CROSS – Many people assume that the cross is a Christian symbol. Christians have indeed adopted the cross but its origins date back long before the Messiah was ever born. The cross can be dated back to ancient Babylon and the worship of the sun-gods Mithra and Tammuz. In fact the cross was not used by Christians until the fourth century after Emperor Constantine (a pagan sun-worshipper) had a vision of the cross in front of the sun.
ANKH – Also known as the Long Life Seal. While Christians try to say the ankh is not a cross, make no mistake about it, the ankh is indeed another rendering of a cross. This symbol originated in Egypt and symbolizes reincarnation. Egyptians were pagans and worshipped many gods like the sun-god Amen-Rah, and the pagan sun-trinity: Osiris, Isis and Horus. The ankh and the common cross were both used equally in ancient pagan sun-worship.
FISH SYMBOL – Also known as the Ichthys Symbol (Greek for fish). Another adaptation of a pagan symbol into Christianity. The fish was used worldwide as a religious symbol associated with the pagan “Great Mother Goddess.” It was meant to represent the outline of her vulva. It is linked to the Age of Pisces and also has associations with the Hindu deity Vishnu but more so with Dagon the fish-god of the Philistines. The name Dagon is derived from dag which means fish. There have also been discoveries of the fish-god in sculptures found in Nineveh Assyria. Dagon is also found in the Scriptures (Judges 16:23-24; 1 Samuel 5:2-5).
TRIQUETRA SYMBOL – Another symbol of the occult adopted by Christianity. This symbol is used to symbolize the Christian trinity doctrine, however this symbol was originally used to represent the Three-Part Goddess (Maiden, Mother, Crone). This symbol is used as a secretive sign by the Aquarian Conspirators (A New Age Cult) and appears on “The Aquarian Conspiracy” a New Age handbook. This symbol also appears on the popular TV show “Charmed” which promotes witchcraft and appears on the front cover of “The Book of Shadows” which is used in witchcraft and Satanism.
PROTECTION SYMBOL – Also known as the Ritual Circle. In the occult a circle always represents a boundary of power. If you see a symbol enclosed in a circle, more times than not it is a symbol of the occult. It is a common practice for those who claim to have outer body experiences to draw a circle around their bodies before leaving so that nothing else can enter it while they are away.
EARTH SYMBOL – Also known as the sun cross, solar cross and as a Hopi medicine wheel. This is the symbol for mother earth in pagan religions such as wicca and other forms of witchcraft. the four sections sometimes represent the four seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter or the four elements of the earth: Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. I have actually seen this symbol on the Calvary Chapel down the street from my house.
PEACE SYMBOL – Also known as the Cross of Nero. Many people are not aware of the origins of this symbol or how it became to symbolize peace. This is the cross of Nero, a broken and inverted cross, enclosed in a circle which represents Nero’s vision. Nero believed that there would be world peace without Christianity, thousands of Christians were martyred under the rule of Nero. This is what the “peace symbol” represents regardless of what it means to you.
ANARCHY SYMBOL – Also known as the Circle-A. Many people do not give it much thought but the anarchy symbol is also of the occult. Enclosed in a circle is the letter A, which represents anarchy. Anarchy is the absence of all law and disobedience to any existing law. This is the nature of Satan our adversary who rebelled against our creator, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law” is the one and law in the Satanic religion. When applied spiritually this doctrine is the doctrine of sin (I-John 3:4).
GAY SYMBOL – Also known as the Thaumaturgic Triangle. Ignorance is bliss amongst the homosexual community. The symbol they adopted to represent their sexual orientation has long been used by Satan worshippers to conjure demons from the bowels of hell. The triangle is used as a door and the circle as a boundary of power. Some Satanists admit doing away with the circle in hopes of being possessed.
PENTACLE – A real popular symbol used by many that dabble in the occult. Many pagans such as those who practice wicca and other forms of witchcraft wear the emblem as a pendant. Some even go as far as placing them in all the rooms of their homes, especially during pagan holy days such as: Christmas, Easter, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day, Valentine’s Day, and last but not least, Halloween.
PENTAGRAM – Another rendering of the popular symbol, only inverted. Today, the pentagram may be even more common than the upright pentacle. Satanists, a more sinister breed of the underworld usually wear this symbol as a pendant or use this symbol in satanic rituals. It is found at many sites where sacrifices and other rituals have taken place. It is also found as art work on many Satanic heavy metal albums such as Slayer.
HEXAGRAM – Another star enclosed in a circle and another popular symbol used by those who practice various forms of witchcraft. This symbol is not as popular with Satanist and may even be used exclusively by those practicing other forms of the occult such as wicca and other forms of witchcraft. Some people confuse this symbol with the Magen David.
MAGEN DAVID – Also known as Solomon’s Seal. This symbol used by the chosen race (Debarim/Deuteronomy 7:14) is often confused with the hexagram by those not familiar with symbology but the Magen David lacks the all too familiar circle associated with most other popular occultic symbols. Magen is the Hebrew word for shield, that is why it is called the Shield of David by some. Legend has it that King David’s shield was shaped as such. It is likely to be associated to King Solomon as well and legend says the symbol appeared on the handle of King Solomon’s Sword.”

The Rosicrucians, or ‘Brethren of the Rosy Cross’, had begun in Europe as a sect of philosophers who claimed knowledge of all the sciences, chiefly medicine, and many secrets of the universe. These were received by tradition from the Egyptians, Chaldeans and other ancient pagan civilisations. As Europe emerged from the dark ages, the unrelenting quest for knowledge and enlightenment spread throughout the continent, and at the close of the sixteenth century many philosophers, alchemists, spiritists and practitioners of astrology had assumed the name of this sect. In October 1617, in Magdeburg, Germany, a meeting was held at which it was formally agreed that the brotherhood of the Rose Croix must maintain the strictest secrecy for a hundred years.It renewed its oath to destroy the church of Jesus Christ and decreed that in the year 1717 it would transform the fraternity into an association which would carry on a more overt campaign while remaining within the bounds of prudence. |
| In England, Robert Fludd, a well known physician of the time, published in 1617 a treatise in explanation of the Rose Croix. He was greatly helped in the foundation of the order in England by Francis Bacon, the writer and philosopher. One of those present at the Magdeburg meeting had been an English architect named Nicholas Stone. His interests in the black arts made him a valued and active member of the sect and he composed rituals for the nine grades of the fraternity. As an architect, belonging to the guild of Freemasons, he had assisted Inigo Jones, the Grand Master of the English lodges, which at this period were non sectarian and had grown from their initial membership of practicing masons, to include many who were admitted to the lodge in an honorary capacity. These ‘accepted masons’ included peers of the realm, men of letters, professional men and a good number of the wealthy middle class. One such honorary member was Thomas Vaughan, a Rosicrucian, who was impressed by the writings of Nicholas Stone and saw in the extended membership of the lodges the perfect medium for the propagation of Rosicrucian doctrines.Thus ‘speculative’ masonry, as contrasted with the original ‘operative’ masonry, developed and flourished in England, as on the continent.Then in 1663, at the General Assembly of masons, the masters of ‘operative’ masonry, feeling themselves in very much of a minority, realised that their only way forward, if they did not wish to leave their lodge, was to unite with their new masters, and fall in with their designs for the future of freemasonry. Lord St. Albans was elected and installed Grand Master, Sir John Denham became his deputy, and Sir Christopher Wren and John Webb, wardens. By the time the English Grand Lodge was founded, on 24th June 1717, significantly 100 tears exactly after the Magdeburg resolution, by James Anderson and six others, including an expatriate Frenchman named Desaguliers who was said to have been head of the Rose Croix, the first three degrees only, Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master Mason, were being worked. Shortly after this, although its exact origin has never been totally ascertained, the Royal Arch came into being as a completion of the third degree and any who wished to progress to the higher degrees were obliged to enter The Ancient and Accepted Rite or some other International Order which worked the higher grades. Until the latter half of the eighteenth century, Freemasonry was confined to Europe, but it soon spread to the New World. In 1761 the Grand Lodge of France, in conjunction with the Council of Knights of the East, deputed a man called Stephen Morin to promulgate masonry in the West Indies, and it was through his efforts there that Scottish Rite Masonry found its way into America.Although in 1766 Morin’s patent was revoked by the Grand Body in Paris for ‘propogating strange and mysterious doctrines’ he had by then seen the establishment of a ‘Sublime Lodge of Perfection’ in Boston, in the north, and in fact went on to erect a similar lodge in Charleston, in the south. These two Masonic powers went on to create numerous other lodges throughout America, but because of that country’s enormous size, progress was slow.Too slow in fact for a certain Hyman Isaac Long, who was to play an important part in the development of the Ancient Rite. He was an ambitious man, full of ideas, and frustrated by the slow growth of American masonry. He left Charleston for Europe where he stayed for the next six years. When he returned, he brought with him his great plan which was the creation of a rite of thirty three degrees, destined to become universal. Together with other officers of the lodge, he constituted this right, taking twenty five degrees of the system of Heredom – The Rose Croix – plus six Templar grades, in which were merged four degrees borrowed from the Bavarian Illuminism of Adam Weishaupt, and two grades of administration. He himself took the title of Sovereign Grand Inspector General 33rd and last degree, he gave the institution the name of Ancient and Accepted Rite, and the first great constitutions were signed at Charleston, on May 31st 1801.In 1891 a patent was granted to the Duke of Sussex to form a supreme Council in England, but it was not acted upon at that time. Finally in 1845, the Supreme council for England and Wales was formed and this assumed control of all independent Rose Croix degrees.

The Rose and CrossRosicrucians, international fraternal order devoted to the pursuit of esoteric wisdom. Two such orders in the United States are the Rosicrucian Fraternity and the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, usually abbreviated AMORC.The former group has a headquarters in Quakertown, Pennsylvania; the latter group has an international headquarters in San Jose, California. Both groups hold that the order began in remote antiquity in Egypt and continued in existence through periods of deliberate secrecy. Rosicrucian teachings combine elements of Egyptian Hermetism, Gnosticism, Jewish Cabalism, and other occult beliefs and practices. | ||||
Many scholars believe that the order actually developed in Germany after the publication of the Fama Fraternitatis and the Confessio Rosae Crucis (1614, 1615; The Fame and Confession of the Fraternity of the Rosy Cross; trans. 1652). These pamphlets record a journey to the Orient made by a pseudonymous Christian Rosenkreuz, who was said to have lived at least a century earlier; they claim that the movement was founded by Rosenkreuz in order to impart the secret wisdom he had gained. The symbol of Rosicrucianism is a combination of the rose and the cross, from which the order takes its name.

The original secrets of the Rose CroixTo give you an idea just how the alchemists kept their secrets secret, let me quote from my favourite example of typically ‘alchemical’ writing. It comes from an unpublished manuscript in the British Museum entitled A Treatise of the Rosie-Crucian Secrets, attributed, perhaps falsely, to Dr Dee:
The Brethren of the Rose Croix (the Invisibles)
It was springtime, the month was March, and although the year was 1623 the people of Paris had already acquired their penchant for good food, good wine, and good conversation. There had been little to talk about recently, however. The king was at Fontainebleau, the war in Germany was going well for the Catholic cause, and the realm was at peace.’ One could, of course, grouse about the badaudswho stood about uselessly in the city’s streets. The badauds were always good for a little early morning grumbling. But on this particular morning they would hardly have mattered. For the night before, the night of 3 March 1623, the city of Paris had been quietly invaded. Not by the hated boche or the much-feared English; but by a group of men who claimed magical powers, men who called themselves the Rosicrucians. ‘For eight years these enthusiasts made converts in Germany,’ wrote Charles Mackay, ‘but they excited little or no attention in other parts of Europe. At last they made their appearance in Paris, and threw all the learned, all the credulous, and all the lovers of the marvellous into commotion. In the beginning of March 1623 the good folks of that city, when they arose one morning, were surprised to find all their walls placarded with the following singular manifesto:
According to the Mercure François, manuscript copies of the placard were passed round hand to hand, and some were affixed to signposts at crossroads — a fact that could not fail to have some magical significance. ‘For a long time this strange placard was the sole topic of conversation in all public places,’ says Mackay. ‘Some few wondered, but the greater number only laughed at it. In the course of a few weeks, two books were published, which raised the first-alarm respecting this mysterious society, whose dwelling-place no one knew, and no members of which had ever been seen. The first was called a history of The frightful Compacts entered into between the Devil and the pretended “Invisibles”; with their damnable Instructions, the deplorable Ruin of their Disciples, and their miserable end. The other was called An Examination of the new unknown Cabala of the Brethren of the Rose-Cross, who have lately inhabited the City of Paris; with the History of their Manners, the Wonders worked by them, and many other particulars. “ The newsmakers on the Pont Neuf, who published these books, gave the mysterious brethren the name ‘the Invisibles’. These books sold rapidly. Everyone was anxious to know something of this dreadful and secret brotherhood. The badauds of Paris were so alarmed that they daily expected to see the archenemy walking in propria persona among them. It was said in these volumes that the Rosicrucian society consisted of six-and-thirty persons in all, who had renounced their baptism and hope of resurrection. That it was not by good angels, as they pretended, that they worked their prodigies; but that it was the devil who gave them power to transport themselves from one end of the world to the other with the rapidity of thought; to speak all languages; to have their purses always full of money, however much they might spend; to be invisible and penetrate into the most secret places, in spite of fastenings of bolts and bars; and to be able to tell the past and future. These thirty-six brethren were divided into bands or companies: six of them only had been sent on the mission to Paris, six to Italy, six to Spain, six to Germany, four to Sweden, and two into Switzerland, two into Flanders, two into Lorraine, and two into Franche Comte. |

Counterfeit Christianity‘I could recall in detail the evening of my ‘perfection’ into the Rose Croix. I remembered the anticipation. almost excitement, which I felt as I prepared for the ceremony, the aesthetic pleasure at the beauty of the setting and the ritual, and the great sense of satisfaction when all was over. I had been welcomed by the Sovereign with the news that Masonry was in a state of despair, having suffered a grievous loss due to the death of the Messiah. This now struck me as rather odd, for surely the whole point of the Messiah’s life was that he had to die. (Luke 18:31—34) The ransom sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God, (see Matthew 20:28) is central to the Christian faith, and the fact that he defeated death and opened the way to eternal life for all believers is a focal point of Christianity, and a source of rejoicing, not despair. Why should Masonry be in despair at his death? Who stood to lose by it? Not Jesus; he rose and triumphed over the grave. Not mankind; the way back to God was now open to them. Who, then? There was only one person who lost out at Calvary, and that was God’s old adversary, Satan. Despite all his efforts, Jesus, the Son of God, had remained obedient to his Father, and in dying on the Cross had overcome death, and freed mankind from its curse, which Satan had brought upon them. If anyone should despair at the death of the Messiah, it was surely Satan, the fallen angel, Lucifer himself. The Rose Croix ritual had consisted of a search for the lost Word, and I, like so many before me, had happily embarked upon it without stopping to think that the Word, the genuine true Word of God, was actually far From lost. Having become flesh and dwelt amongst men For thirty-three years, the Word was now seated at the right hand of God in heaven (see John’s Gospel, chapter 1). I had carried out my part in the ceremony, and ‘found’ ;he Word, that is the four letters INRI, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the name of God’s son, the Word of 3od made flesh; and then what had happened to that tame? In front of the altar I had seen it burned ‘to keep it from the eyes of the profane’; but Jesus’ name should never be kept from anyone, profane or otherwise, for had he not come to save sinners? How could this be done if His Name is to be kept from all but the few? As Acts chapter 4 : 12 says ‘Salvation is found in no-one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven given to men by which we must be saved’ …………………….I finally realised, with total certainty, that the supposedly Christian order which I had been so anxious to join, had nothing whatsoever to do with Christianity.; the constant allusions to Jesus of Nazareth and the apparently Christian symbolism thus rendered it completely counterfeit and I knew that the inner voice which had cried out in protest at the white wine and salt used in the final part of the ritual had been right’
The most deadly heresy of this degree lies in the fact that it is the Candidate himself who symbolically achieves both light and perfection by his own efforts, not in Christ or Christ for him. it is the Candidate who gives his age as thirty-three who journeys for thirty-three days, passing through the Black Room and the Chamber of Death to his mystical resurrection in the Red Room. The prayer in the Black Room until recently contained the phrase “ grant that we, being solely occupied with the work of our redemption “ And the Resurrection in the Closing ceremonies is defined significantly as the “hour of a Perfect Mason “. Our Lord’s redemptive death is treated as a type and an allegory of the experiences which a Mason must undergo in his quest for light, not as a unique and objective act of redemption wrought for him by God. This is, of course, a purely Gnostic conception.
Counterfeit communion
During the degree ritual a counterfeit communion is held. Rather than scriptural and traditional bread and wine (red to symbolise the Blood of Jesus) the candidate partakes of biscuit, white wine and salt. Why salt? Here is a brief extract from the Rosicrucian web site

18th degree Rose Croix ceremony on the Thursday before Easter.
After the opening prayer (from which the name of Jesus Christ was conspicuously excluded), I stood and opened the service. As I had done so many times before, I said, “We meet this day to commemorate the death of our ‘most wise and perfect master’, not as inspired or divine, for this is not for us to decide, but as at least the greatest of the apostles of mankind” As I spoke these words that I had spoken so many times before I had a strange and powerful experience. It was as if I was standing apart listening to myself as I spoke, and the words echoed deep within me, shouting their significance. They were the same words I had spoken so many times before, but had meaning for me now. They made me sick, literally ill, and I stopped. The realisation of what I had just said grew within me like a rising crescendo. I had just called Jesus an ‘apostle of mankind’ who was neither inspired nor divine. There was a silent pause that seemed to last a very long time as I struggled with a sick smothering within. When I was finally able, I continued with the service and we gathered around a large table across the room in marching order. The table was long, shaped like a cross, and covered with a red cloth which was decorated down the centre with roses. Once we were assembled at the table, I elevated (lifted high) the plate of bread, took a piece, put my hand on the shoulder of the man in front of me, gave him the plate and said, “Take, eat, and give to the hungry” This continued until all had partaken of the bread. Then I lifted up the goblet of wine, took a sip, and said, “take, drink, and give to the thirsty” Again, this continued until all had partaken of the wine. After this we took our places at the table shaped like a cross and sat down. The setting was dark, our long sweeping robes were solid black, our faces nearly concealed in the hoods, and the mood was one of heavy gloom. The Christ less prayers and the hymns we sang fitted right in. The one word that would describe the entire event would be ‘black’. It was, indeed, a black communion – a strange black mass” There was a large Menorah (candlestick with seven candleholders) in the centre of the room. Standing again, I said, “This is indeed a sad day, for we have lost our master. We may never see him again. He is dead! Mourn, weep and cry, for he is gone” Then I asked the officers to extinguish the candles in the large Menorah. Finally with only the centre candle burning, I arose walked sadly to the centre of the room, extinguished the last candle – the candle representing the life of Jesus – our wise and perfect master. We had dramatised and commemorated the snuffing out of the life of Jesus*, without once mentioning His name, and the scene ended with the room in deep silent darkness. I walked out of the room, leaving only the darkness and the stillness of death. Once again, the single word best to describe it would be ‘black’

The Rose Croix ceremony
The 18th Degree, the Rose Croix of Heredom, is worked in full, and indeed is one of the most popular of all the ‘other degrees.’
Among its sixteen thousand Excellent Perfect Princes the 1950 Handbook lists some four hundred and seventy-five clergymen, including seventeen bishops and a Kelham Father, who subscribe to its nauseating mixture of macabre sentimentality and heresy with a stupefaction of conscience or blindness of theological perception which is extremely difficult to understand. The Craft degrees, however objectionable, are based on comparatively harmless fables in an Old Testament context; the Rose Croix bases its workings on the Crucifixion of Our Lord Himself. As this degree is particularly obnoxious and worthy of ecclesiastical condemnation, a fuller account of it will be given.
Three rooms are required for this degree (apart from the preparation room). First there is the Black Room, in which is an altar hung with black over which are represented three crosses; the centre one with the Mystic Rose (in black) on its limbs, surrounded by the crown of thorns; the other two have the skull and crossbones depicted at their feet. On the Altar are the Holy Scriptures, an unsheathed sword, and a pair of compasses. On the floor are depicted seven concentric white circles on a black ground, with the emblem of the pelican in the centre. In the North, West, and South there are three pillars surmounted by lights; suspended from these pillars are cards or tins on which are painted respectively the letters F, H, and C, standing for Faith, Hope, and Charity.
The Black Room should open into the Chamber of Death, containing skull and crossbones, and even a figure in a winding-sheet laid out as a corpse; a lamp of spirits of wine and salt is placed behind these emblems, and the chamber may be further illuminated by transparencies representing skulls, crossbones, etc., or by flambeaux fixed in skulls.
The third, or Red Room, is brilliantly illuminated and hung with red. The altar in this room has a super-altar of eight steps with thirty-three lights. On the fourth step is the Cubic Stone,’ which opens with a red rose in the centre. The altar is profusely decorated with roses. In the centre of the room is a representation of the Mysterious Ladder of Seven Steps with the movable letters F. H. and C. and I.N.R.I. (the word of this degree) one on each step, with a rose on each.
The Opening ceremony contains the following passage :—
Most Wise Sovereign. Excellent and Perfect First General, what is the hour?
| 1st General. Most Wise Sovereign | The ninth hour of the day. Then it is the hour when the Veil of the Temple was rent in twain and darkness overspread the earth, when the true Light departed from us, the Altar was thrown down, the Blazing Star was eclipsed, the Cubic Stone poured forth Blood and Water, the Word was lost, and despair and tribulation sat heavily upon us. (A solemn pause). Since Masonry has experienced such dire calamities it is our duty, Princes, to endeavour, by renewed labours, retrieve our loss. May the benign influence of Faith, Hope, and Charity prosper our endeavours to recover the lost Word; for which purpose I declare this Chapter of Princes Rose Croix of Heredom duly open, in the Name the Great Emmanuel. |
For any Christian to declare that Masonry experienced a “dire calamity” at the Crucifixion, or that Masons suffered a “loss” in the triumphant redemptive death of Our Saviour on the Cross which the Excellent and Perfect Princes of the Rose Croix of Heredom can by their own labours “retrieve” seems not only heretical but actually blasphemous. The only interpretation which makes sense of this passage would appear to be that it is not the death of Our Lord which is mourned, but the defeat of Satan.
The Candidate for perfection enters the Chapter in the Black Room while it is thus plunged in gloom, and after giving the word of the previous degree (Abaddon) and his age (whatever it may be) as thirty-three, is told that “consternation spreads horror over our brows, the earth quakes, the rocks are rent, the veil of the Temple is rent asunder” etc. He is welcomed, however, in hopes that his courage may assist them to retrieve the lost word. Prayer is offered for him, and the Excellent and Perfect Marshal escorts him in a mystic travel of thirty-three days to the three pillars in turn (accompanied by solemn music) where he detaches the three letters F. H. and C, which are presented to the Most Wise Sovereign. The Candidate is congratulated on his success thus far in discovering the initials of those virtues by whose assistance he may discover the lost word, and the curtains concealing the Altar are drawn apart. He then takes his Obligation on the New Testament, swearing both secrecy and allegiance to the Supreme Chapter.’
The Candidate now withdraws for a brief period of meditation, On his re-entry a procession is formed which passes round the Black Room (all bowing to the Cross in passing) and all except the Marshal and the Candidate pass direct into the Red Room. The Candidate finds his way thither barred because he is unable to give the word. He is told that his attire is incompatible with that humility necessary for those who wish to recover the word, and he is accordingly veiled in black crêpe. He then enters the dimly-lit Chamber of Death,and in his stumblings over the skulls and other grotesqueries is assisted by Raphael, who conducts him to the solemn rendering of a funeral march through the Chamber to the brilliantly illuminated Red Room.
Here be symbolically ascends the mystic ladder “which leads from darkness to glory and perfection “, picking up the letters from each step. After Faith, Hope and Charity are disposed of. the word is triumphantly found, as follows

These four letters I.N.R.I. forming the word are placed on the Cubic Stone on the altar; the Candidate is presented with a rose, invested with the collar and jewel of the Order, and sealed with the “seal of perfection “—symbols of the “hidden truths known only to the perfect Mason.” The signs are given,’ and the Herald proclaims the Candidate King of the Pelican and Eagle and a Prefect and Puissant Prince of the Rose Croix of Heredom.
The concluding ceremony is the Third Point, or “Feast of Fraternal Affection “, which though outwardly professing to be a mere agape or love-feast, has in its close context with Calvary a possible interpretation far more sinister. A wafer is first consumed. The Most Wise Sovereign presents a piece to the Prelate, both dip their fragments into salt and eat them. The Prelate then communicates his next neighbour in like manner, and so on. The Most Wise Sovereign then partakes of the chalice of wine with the Prelate, who replies with the sign of the Good Shepherd, exchanging the words. The second part of this sign accompanied by the words pax vobiscum, it may be noted, is not unlike the Pax ceremony in the Latin Mass but given with the arms crossed. The Prelate then drinks with his neighbour on his left, accompanied by the same exchange of signs and words, and so on till all have communicated.
The Most Wise Sovereign, then says “all is consumed “, to which reply is made Gloria in excelsis Dec et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis
The four cards on which the letters of the word are inscribed are then removed from the Altar, “that it be not exposed to the eyes of the profane but be consumed according to ancient custom “, and the Prelate burns them in a second chalice which the 1891 edition of the ritual specifies should contain “spirits of wine with chloride of strontium “,‘ and pronounces the words consummatum est. Strontium compounds are used. as every pyrotechnician knows, in rockets and other fireworks where a vivid rose-red flame is required. Its use at this culminating point in a solemn religious ceremony is dramatic and doubtless (to a certain type) emotionally impressive. Indeed only the most captious of critics would venture to suggest that these red flames might in themselves be a Masonic symbol of the origins of this strange parody of Christian worship.

An address on this degree explains that “the Rose is an emblem of secrecy and silence ; in the Song of Solomon we find reference to the Saviour under the mystical title of The Rose of Sharon.” Here indeed, in this direct association of Christ with an emblem which (according to Masonry, not the Bible) signifies secrecy, is a further admission that this degree interprets Christianity in the light of a mystery-religion of the type abhorred and anathematised by the early Church.
“May we henceforth treasure up the sacred doctrines of the Order in the secret repository of our hearts” proclaims the Most Wise Sovereign after the Feast of Fraternal Affection. If the “sacred doctrines” of this Order are Christian and orthodox as is so often maintained’ it is wholly false, immoral, and ridiculous to keep them in a “secret repository “. If they are other than the teachings of the Church, and therefore not orthodox, the Church has every right and indeed the duty to tear off the tawdry veil of bogus mysticism and inquire into these “sacred doctrines” to which a group of her Bishops, hundreds of her clergy, and thousands of her laity have sworn allegiance and secrecy.

The Cross of Lorraine: Emblem of the Royal Secret
When various members of the House of Anjou plotted to topple the Valois dynasty of France, the symbol of the conspirators was the Cross of Lorraine, the heraldic emblem of René d’Anjou, said by Charles Peguy to represent the “arms of Christ”, “the arms of Satan”, and, strangely, the blood of both. René was the Angevin monarch who, at the time of the renaissance, single-handedly spearheaded a Hermetic revival in Europe. It was he who personally convinced Cosimo de Medici to translate many ancient texts such as the Corpus Hermeticum into various European tongues for the first time ever. And when Corpus Hermeticum was first published in France, the dedication it bore was to Marie de Guise, wife of James Stuart V, mother of Mary Queen of Scots, and a descendant of René who also adopted the Cross of Lorraine as a personal symbol.
That the Cross of Lorraine is a symbol embodying the Hermetic ideal is fairly obvious. The Angevins were primarily advocates of the Regia, or Royal Art, of hermeticism; a tradition which according to legend was passed down to man by a race of fallen angels. This isn’t at all inconsistent with the perennially Luciferian overtones associated with the entire Angevin saga.
Interestingly, the Cross of Lorraine bears an uncanny resemblance to the sigil of Baphomet employed by British Magus Aleister Crowley, and the meaning of the two symbols would appear to be virtually synonymous. Baphomet is, after all, the penultimate hermetic symbol, whether depicted by Crowley in the form of a cross, or by Eliphas Levi as a goat-headed hermaphrodite. And the sigil used by Crowley was also employed by ancient alchemists as a device whose meaning was literally “very poisonous.” In fact, the symbol was commonly affixed to containers of toxic substances in Europe as recently as the mid-twentieth century. To the alchemists, of course, the symbol and its very meaning had far more esoteric connotations. To them, poison represented an agent of transformation, a vehicle for the reconciliation of opposites. And there is an alchemical myth about a poison which for most men is extremely deadly, while for the elect it confers mastership and absolute power. Echoes of this idea recur as a motif in various aspects of the Grail lore. It would seem that the alchemists accorded this symbol very much the same meaning attributed it by Crowley, which in turn echoes what the Cross of Lorraine embodied for Rene d’Anjou. It is little known, but the Cross of Lorraine was also the official emblem of the Knights Templar.
Though they are more frequently associated with the symbol of the red equilateral cross, their true symbol first and foremost was the Cross of Lorraine, and many Templars awaiting death at the stake pursuant to the Friday the 13th persecutions drew the emblem on the walls of their cells. There is still a degree in certain rites of Freemasonry called the Knights Templar, whose symbol is the Cross of Lorraine. It is interesting to note that even the less esoteric-looking equilateral cross used by the Templars had essentially the same meaning: that of the union of opposites, the intersection of creative force and destructive force, or the union of male and female principles. It was a fundamental occult symbol, and it was in deference to the idea which it embodied that medieval occult rituals were often held at crossroads.
The Cross of Lorraine is far more explicit in it’s iconography: the bar above mirroring the bar below, both of which are symmetrically affixed to a central pillar that provides balance and equilibrium. As above, so below is, after all, a Hermetic maxim. And the three bars of which the cross is composed echo Eliphas Levi’s concept of the true trinity. Levi posited that the world is governed by two primordial forces, one creative, the other destructive. The equilibrium between these two forces constitutes a third force, and the union of the three constitutes what some might refer to as… God.
The central role of the principle of equilibrium in various occult arts cannot be overstressed. For Master Mason Albert Pike, equilibrium represented the Royal Secret, the pivotal principle upon which the universe is ordered. And Pike’s specific designation of equilibrium as a royal secret is of particular significance because, as previously mentioned, Hermeticism has traditionally been known as the Royal Art, and its central tenet is essentially that of equilibrium. And too, when Pike calls it a Royal secret, he isn’t speaking figuratively, but strictly in literal terms. Hermes, according to legend, was the sole receptacle of the secret doctrine of the antediluvian world, which he revived after the flood and passed down to the Kings. As you’ll recall, this secret knowledge was thought to have been taught to man by a race of Gods or fallen angels. This knowledge was kept secret because it was probably recognized that for all but an elect few, such thought would no doubt bring about their ruin. This brings to mind the concept of the alchemical poison. Kings and aristocrats would understand how to wield and apply the secret doctrine because it was believed that they were in fact flesh and blood descendants of the Forgotten Race which had come down to take the wives of men.
References to this Forgotten Race occur repeatedly in numerous religions and mythologies throughout the world, and should most likely be known to readers of this magazine. Their doctrines have been enshrined in myth, legend, and many religious symbols, in which they are looked upon by many, and recognized by but a few. They are, and shall remain, the Royal Secret. The Cross of Lorraine is a sigil of that Royal Secret, the doctrine of the Forgotten Ones.
Warning Concerning Symbols In the world of the occult, many symbols are imbued with power by the magician working in conjunction with the demonic spirit world. The Wiccan leader Starhawk, founder of the Covenant of the Goddess, knows that well. “To cast a spell is to project energy through a symbol,” she wrote in The Spiral Dance, her popular manual for witchcraft.
Since the occult use of symbols have spread like epidemic across the Western world, we want to exercise caution. Therefore, when we began to add pictures to the original list of symbols, we decided to leave out certain images – particularly satanic symbols that obviously represent evil. Though many were already familiar to children in public schools, we didn’t want to risk implanting those images on a child’s mind. (We will explain why in another note.) We also left out the theosophical symbol, some of the more complex masonic symbols, and other symbols typically used for magic and alchemy. To explain, let me share an important lesson I learned about five years ago.
I was speaking at a Bay Area Sunday School Convention (BASS) in California on the topic, “The Unholy Power of Charms and Symbols.” Parents and teachers were still crowding into the small auditorium, when I began showing transparencies of simple symbols such as the yin-yang, the peace symbol, and the ankh. We discussed why these symbols were important to people long ago – and why their popularity has skyrocketed today.
Then we looked at more universal symbols such as the pentagram, the lightening bolt, the sun, and the circle — including the Wiccan quartered circle, the Native American medicine wheel, and the Buddhist wheel of life. “Why are they considered universal?” I asked. “What mythical themes do they echo from around the world? Why are they so important to multicultural education?” (We will post a chapter from A Twist of Faith which answers these questions.)
Finally, we looked at compound symbols. (You can see an example at the end of the current list of symbols.) The day before the conference, I had been searching for a particular combination of symbols found in a Theosophical emblem. By the time I did find it, it was too late to put it on a transparency. Then I had made a foolish decision: I prepared to draw the occult image onto the transparency in front of the class.
Putting the clear transparency on the projector, I drew a large circle, then added two overlapping triangles (one pointing up, one pointing down), forming a hexagram. I began to fill in various single symbols: the pentagram, swastika…. Suddenly, something dark and heavy hit me in the chest. For a moment I lost both my balance and my breath, then, in a flash, I knew what was happening. I had unwittingly performed an occult ritual common to Buddhist and Native Americans traditions as well as to medieval alchemy. By the very act of drawing the symbols, I had invoked a spiritual entity.
Still in front of the crowd and the microphone, I cried out, ” “Forgive me, Lord! Cover me with your blood. In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare Your victory over the evil one. In You, we are ‘more than conquerors!’ Thank you, Jesus, my Lord and my King!”
I apologized to the audience, asking their forgiveness for imposing on them a ritual that brought forth this evil. Then we all thanked God for His lesson and protection.
As fast as the demonic entity came, it was gone. Among the people gathered around me afterwards was a woman who said, “I think I know what happened to you. While you were drawing that symbol, the man sitting next to me was moving his hands in strange ways and murmuring something as if he was casting a spell. He may have come to bring occult interference.”
It didn’t surprise me. I have often encountered challenges when I address these topics in public places. But God has always used it for good, giving me answers on the spot as well as ongoing opportunities to share with them God’s truth and wisdom.
Only God knows exactly what happened. But His Word is full of warnings concerning any participation in the works of darkness. If I opened the door to evil interference through my foolish demonstration, a servant of Satan could surely work with the evil one to enhance his work. God, who promises never to give Satan more reigns than His love allows, will still allow the painful consequences needed for our training in obedience.
Though we fellowship at a small, non-charismatic, non-denominational Bible church, God has often put me in places where I have had to help those who were trapped in occult bondage. Through these lessons, I have learned to look with sober caution at the power of evil. Yet, all the more, I praise my Lord for His continual protection and faithfulness

The Anunnaki or Gods of Mesopotamia are a race of superhumanly powerful humanoid beings who were once worshipped by several of the races and cultures of Mesopotamia, particularly the ancient Sumerians and Babylonians from about 4000 BC during the rise of human civilization to 1500 BC when their worship was replaced by other religions, particularly the Judeo-Christian Church. (Some references have them worshipped much earlier in the Hyborian Age, as far back as 18,000 BC: however, many of these beings have been exposed as demonic entities.) The human worshippers of the Anunnaki often referred to their deities by other names than by which they were originally known: for example, the Sumerians worshipped a sea-god named Ea whereas the Babylonians knew him as Enki. The Anunnaki no longer have or actively seek worshippers on earth. However, certain gods, notably Baal and Dagon, are often called upon by practitioners of black magic to exploit their most darker attributes while other deities like Ninurta still have an active interest in the welfare of humanity.
The Anunnaki dwell in Celestial Dilmun, a small “pocket” dimension adjacent to Earth; an interdimensional nexus between Celestial Dilmun and Earth exists somewhere on Mount Saphon in the Ararat Mountains of Western Turkey. Celestial Dilmun was named after the region of Dilmun on Earth (modern Bahrain) to which the ruler Utnapishtim retired after his reign of the city of Ur.
The precise origin of the Anunnaki, like that of all of Earth’s pantheons of gods, is shrouded in legend. The earliest Sumerian gods were Tiamat, the great ocean-goddess, and Apsu, the god of freshwater. It is believed that Tiamat may have actually been Gaea, the primordial earth-mother, later known as the Babylonian goddess, Ninhursag, who had survived the destruction of the Elder Gods of Earth by infusing her life into the life-giving essence of the Earth. However, the Greeks believed Tiamat was actually the primeval sea-goddess, Thalassa, daughter of the gods Erebus and Nyx. Many of the Elder Gods had degenerated into demonic status and were destroyed by Atum or had fled Earth for other planes of existence. Atum had been born from Gaea by mating with the sentient biosphere of the Earth known as the Demiurge. Atum later departed Earth to allow Gaea to give birth of the later races of gods. However, it is unclear if the Anunnaki originated on Earth or in another dimension. According to ancient myths, Tiamat and Apsu gave birth to the first generation of the Sumerian gods; these beings were partially humanoid and had both human and animal characteristics. From among them, Lahhamu and Lakhmu gave birth to Anshar and Kishar, the first true gods. Anshar and Kishar were completely humanoid in appearance and conceived Anu, Ea, Damkina, Mami and possibly Asherah and Eriskegal who were added later to the pantheon, but were certainly equal to these earlier gods. (Asherah has also been linked to the Olympian goddess Dione, mother of Astarte, known to the Greeks as Aphrodite.) These progeny were overwhelmed by the children of Tiamat and forced to live on earth in subservient roles until Anu slew Alalu, the water-god, and claimed Earth for himself, leaving mankind to toil the earth. Tiamat was either slain or driven from earth and her mate, Apsu, slain by later younger gods.
Anu meanwhile established himself from Earth as the supreme ruler of the Mesopotamian gods, but he was overthrown by his son, Enlil, whose power had begun to eclipse his father. Anu meanwhile departed Earth for Celestial Dilmun. Enlil was later called Dagon by invading Philistine tribes from the west, but he was dethroned himself by his brother, Hadad, the god of wind, who supported their father but claimed it for himself. Hadad was supported by the sea-god, Ea, but was driven into exile by Enlil and Ullikummis to reclaim the throne. Hadad sought help from Ea to be restored to the throne, and overthrew Dagon, exiling him to the underworld. After the Sumerian Empire fell in decline, Ea placed his own son, Marduk, on the throne. Marduk became the tutelary deity of the Babylonian Empire.
Eventually, Marduk left control of Earth to his mortal ancestors and departed for Celestial Dilmun. After the reign of each god, they departed from Earth to take their place in Celestial Dilmun; those Sumerian gods who had departed Earth became known as the Igigi. However, none of the consecutive human reigns on Earth had the power or ability to hold their lands as well as the Sumerians or the Babylonians. Worship of the Anunnaki was replaced by Judaism and Christianity as well as by Zoroasterism and Islam. In fact, several Hebrew priests such as Daniel were known for driving gods like Marduk from Babylon. Some of the accounts of the gods on Earth were rewritten by ancient Hebrews scholars who re-wrote them as they preserved them; the gods who drove Lilith from Palestine were re-identified as angels or servants of the Judeo-Christian God. In fact, attributes of those religions began filtering into the worship of the Sumerian gods, particularly the concept of good and evil, and several of the gods, such as Dagon and Baal, were recognized for having more demonic attributes than godly attributes. The invading Greeks brought their Olympian gods with them and enmity formed between the Anunnaki and the Olympians for several years until the Third Host of the Celestials, immense cosmic beings with connections to the development of humanity on Earth..
During the Third Host of the Celestials, Anu, the Ruler of the Anunnaki, and Zeus, King of the Olympian gods, brought a cease to their hostilities when they were approached by Odin, Chieftain of the Asgardian gods, to meet with the rulers of the other gods once worshipped on Earth to discuss the threat of the Third Host of the Celestials. The Celestials had threatened to seal off the portals of each of their godly realms unless they promised to stop interfering in mortal affairs. With his fellow godheads, Anu swore to this pledge and even made a vow to Odin to donate the necessary life energies to the Asgardians slain during the Fourth Host of the Celestials. When Thor came to Dilmun to petition a portion of the required life energies as part of this vow, Anu offered Thor the necessary energies to restore the slain Asgardian gods to life.
Until recent years, the vast majority of the Anunnaki have had little contact with humans, however, several beings, notably demonic entities, have claimed to be the former Sumerian gods. Whether these are the former gods having degenerated into a demonic status or earlier darker gods is unrevealed. It is known that a group of extra-terrestrials known as Oans impersonated the Mesopotamian gods and may have acted as their representatives on earth, just as the Eternals did for the Olympians. In modern years, Eriskegal, the goddess of the underworld, briefly joined with various other underworld gods in an attempt to merge to realms that failed. Anu has been a part of the Council of Godheads on at least one occasion, and a being claiming to be Baal recently clashed with Wolverine of the X-Men.
The full status of the Sumerian and Babylonian gods has yet to be revealed.
Relationships to Other Pantheons: With the possible exception of the Ennead of Egypt, the Anunnaki are possibly one of the oldest pantheons of gods on earth and possibly share boundaries with more pantheons than any other group of gods on Earth. To the south, they shared worship rites and to some extent intermingled with the Ennead and the Devas (Hindu Gods) of the East. Relations with the Olympian gods to the west in Greece have been strained since Greek and Roman occupation of Palestine and Canaan up until the formation of the Council of Godheads. The Dievans (Slavic Gods) beyond the boundary of the Black Sea have not had any known dealings with the Anunnaki.

- In Sumerian myths, the Anunnaki (“Children of Anu”) were the gods of earth and the underworld while the Igigi (“Heavenly Ones”) were the gods of sky and heaven, or those gods who had departed earth. The Sebettu (Isirru) were a race of demons while the Edimmu were considered evil spirits contrary to the Shedu (djinni) who were spirits of fortune and good luck.
- In Marvel Comics, several demonic and alien entities have been named after Mesopotamian deities. The Hercules and Thor Encyclopedia Mythological has declared these beings to be the actual former Sumerian gods, but several previous plot points and incidents would suggest that the true Sumerian gods exist not just in the DC Universe, but also somewhere behind the scenes of the MU. At the least, these beings are referred to as “Annunaki” instead of “Anunnaki” (the preferred spelling) and have a genealogy quite unlike the mythological Sumerian gods.
- The figure of Saja from Marvel Comics is not an actual mythological deity (much like Amora the Enchantress of the Asgardians). He was possibly an artificial construct, but this is uncertain.
